What to Expect at Your Senior Portrait Session

If you have never had professional portraits taken before, it is completely normal to not know what to expect. Most seniors walk into their session a little nervous and walk out wondering why they were worried in the first place. Whether you love being in front of a camera or have been dreading this since your parents brought it up, here is exactly what a senior portrait session with me looks like from start to finish.

Before your session date, we will have a planning consultation to talk through everything, including locations, outfits, and the overall vibe you are going for. This is where we figure out what fits your personality and make sure the session is perfectly designed for you. If you have a Pinterest board full of ideas, I would love to see it. If you have no idea where to start, that is exactly what the consultation is for. We will talk through what locations make sense for your style, how many outfits to bring, and what kind of portraits you actually want to walk away with. By the time your session date arrives, nothing should feel like a surprise.

On the day of your session, plan to arrive relaxed and on time. Wear your first outfit and have your other looks ready to change into. I even bring a pop-up tent you can use to change outfits on location. Bring everything we talked about in your consultation, and if you are doing hair and makeup, make sure you schedule it with enough time to spare so you are not rushing to arrive. Sessions are a minimum of two hours by design, giving us plenty of time to work through multiple locations and outfit changes without feeling rushed or worn out. If you are combining your senior session with an equestrian or athlete component, sessions may run longer to accommodate everything.

I will guide you through every pose and every location. You will not be left standing awkwardly wondering what to do with your hands or which direction to look. Direction is a core part of the experience, and most seniors are genuinely surprised by how natural it starts to feel after the first few minutes. The goal is never to manufacture something stiff and posed. It is to capture who you actually are, which usually requires a little movement, a little conversation, and occasionally something that makes you laugh when you least expect it.

Plan to move around a lot and change outfits more than once. Some moments will feel a little silly and some will feel genuinely great. The best senior portraits rarely happen when someone is standing perfectly still trying to look good for the camera. They happen in between, when you forget the camera is there and just exist in the moment.

After your session, I get to work editing your images right away because I know you are excited to see them. Your ordering appointment is scheduled as soon as your images are ready, and I make it a priority to turn these around quickly. Most clients tell me the session itself is one of their favorite parts, but seeing their portraits for the first time at the ordering appointment runs a very close second. Some people come in a little nervous about the selection process, wondering if they will love what they see. They always do. Walking through your images together, seeing how everything came together, and choosing your favorites is genuinely one of the most fun and exciting parts of the whole experience. Whether you are choosing wall art for your home, a digital collection, or both, I am there to guide you through every decision so nothing feels overwhelming.

A few final tips to make the most of your session. Get a good night of sleep the night before and drink plenty of water in the days leading up to it. Pack your outfits carefully so nothing arrives wrinkled, and bring snacks since we will be out for at least two hours. If you start feeling nervous when you arrive, just tell me. I have worked with seniors at every comfort level and know how to help you settle in.

Most importantly, trust the process. The best portraits happen when you stop trying to control how you look and start enjoying the moment. That is what the planning consultation, the unhurried timeline, and the guided experience are all designed to make possible.

Senior year goes fast. Your portraits should feel as good as they look.
