Frequently Asked Questions

  • I am based in Lake Orion, Michigan and serve clients across metro Detroit and Southeast Michigan, including Oakland, Lapeer, and Macomb counties and beyond. I take portraits everywhere you can think of, places you would expect like nature parks, downtowns, and studio space, and plenty of places you might not. I have a long list of favorite locations built up from years of photographing across the area, and I am always happy to photograph somewhere that is meaningful to you.

  • I specialize in senior portraits, family photography, couples and engagement sessions, maternity and newborn photography, equestrian and horse and rider photography, pet portraits, athlete and dance photography, headshots, and commercial and branding work. Every session is a fully custom experience built around you.

  • Working with me is designed to feel easy from start to finish. I guide you through every step, from the initial planning conversation through selecting your final portraits at your ordering appointment. You will never be handed a gallery of hundreds of images and left to figure it out on your own. My job is to make the whole experience enjoyable, and the result is portraits you actually love and know exactly what to do with.

If you would like to hear from a past client directly, I am happy to connect you with someone who has been through the process. I will always ask for their permission before sharing any contact information. Just mention it when you reach out.

  • Start by reaching out through the contact page with your session type and preferred timeframe. We will connect to talk through the details, answer your questions, and make sure we are a great fit. Once we decide to move forward I will collect a retainer to hold your date. The remaining balance is due before your session.

  • Fall dates for senior photos in Metro Detroit fill up quickly, and the best golden hour slots on Fridays and Saturdays go first. For family, equestrian, and other portrait sessions, two to three months in advance is a good rule of thumb, though I do occasionally have shorter notice availability. The earlier you reach out the more flexibility we have in finding the perfect date, time, and location for your session.

  • Every session is a fully custom experience built around you. This typically includes a planning consultation, your photography session, and an ordering appointment. With all these variables it is best we get on the phone, talk through your session needs, and then I can provide a quote based on what you are looking for.

  • After your session I will edit your favorite images and we will meet for a design appointment, either in person or virtually. At this appointment you will see your portraits for the first time, select your favorites, and choose your artwork and digital products. I use professional wall design software so you can see exactly how your portraits will look in your home before ordering anything. Nothing is left to guesswork.

This appointment is one of my favorite parts of the process. Most clients find it exciting and emotional to see their portraits come to life.

  • I offer a range of fine art products including wall portraits, framed prints, albums, and digital files. At your ordering appointment we will go through your images together and I will help you select the portraits and products that are the right fit for your home, your style, and your budget. Professional wall design software lets you see exactly how your portraits will look in your space before anything is ordered. Nothing is left to guesswork.

  • Yes. I understand that fine art photography is an investment and I want it to be accessible. Payment plans are available for artwork orders. We can discuss the details during your ordering appointment.

  • Yes. Whether you are interested in printed artwork, digital files, or both, I am here to help you through the entire selection process. At your ordering appointment we will go through your portraits together and I will help you choose the images and products that are the right fit for you. The goal is that you walk away with portraits you genuinely love and know exactly how to enjoy, rather than a folder of files you are not sure what to do with. That guided experience is one of the things my clients value most about working with me.

  • Digital files are available but I do not offer a digital-only package. I am a full-service studio, which means my focus is on delivering finished artwork that looks beautiful in your home, not just files. That said, digital images are included in most artwork collections so you will have files to share alongside your prints and wall art.

If you are looking for a photographer who hands over a gallery of hundreds of images with no additional service, I may not be the right fit, and that is okay. My clients value the guided experience and the finished product.

  • This varies by session type and the collection you choose. At your design appointment you will select the images you love most rather than receiving every frame from the session. This is intentional. The goal is a curated set of portraits you genuinely love, not a overwhelming gallery of hundreds of similar images to sort through yourself.

  • I get to work on your images right away because I know you are excited to see them. Your ordering appointment is scheduled as soon as your images are ready, and I make it a priority to turn these around quickly. Finished artwork and digital files are delivered after your ordering appointment once your order is placed.

  • Yes. All delivered images are professionally edited and retouched. I handle standard retouching including skin, temporary blemishes, and any distracting elements. I do not do heavy-handed body modification but I will make sure you look and feel your best.

  • This is one of the things we talk through during your planning consultation. I will send you styling guidance specific to your session type and give you honest feedback on what tends to photograph well. For seniors I help coordinate looks across multiple outfits. For families I help everyone coordinate without being too matchy. For equestrian sessions I can advise on what works best for your discipline and setting.

  • Sessions are a minimum of two hours, giving us plenty of time to work through your session without feeling rushed. Depending on the type of session and what we have planned, sessions may run longer to accommodate multiple locations, outfit changes, or specialty components like equestrian or athlete photography.

  • For outdoor sessions I monitor the weather closely and will reach out if conditions look problematic. Light clouds and overcast skies actually produce beautiful soft light for portraits so do not be discouraged by a grey day. If it is actively raining we will reschedule to my next available date. Your retainer moves with you to the new date.

  • Yes, and it is one of my strengths. Whether it is a senior who has never had professional photos taken, a family with young kids who will not sit still, or a horse that is having a big day, I come prepared with patience, calm energy, and the experience to bring out the best in everyone in front of my camera. Most clients tell me afterward that it was much easier than they expected.

  • For equestrian sessions that call for it, I have access to second shooters who are horse owners themselves. They understand the environment, know how to move around horses safely, and can help capture the full session from multiple angles. This is available upon request and we will discuss whether it makes sense for your session during the planning process.

  • I have a long list of favorite spots across Oakland, Lapeer, and Macomb counties and throughout metro Detroit built up from years of shooting in the area. From open meadows and wooded trails near Independence Oaks and Stony Creek to brick-lined streets in downtown Rochester and waterfront areas around Lake Orion, there is no shortage of options. If your senior has a specific place in mind, even better. I love incorporating locations that are meaningful to the client.

  • Absolutely, and I love when they do. Moms especially often want a few portraits with their senior, and I think that is a wonderful idea. If you want to bring a parent, sibling, or the family dog along for part of a senior session, let us plan for it. If the family pet is part of a family portrait session, bring them along. These moments often produce some of the most meaningful images from the entire session. Just mention it during your planning consultation so we can build it into the timeline.

  • Weddings are not a standard part of my business model, though I do have experience shooting them. In rare circumstances where it feels like a truly special fit, I am open to the conversation. If you are engaged, I would love to capture your engagement session. For your wedding day I am also happy to recommend several excellent photographers in the metro Detroit area who I trust.

  • Yes, please do. I love seeing clients share their portraits. I ask that you credit Erika Proctor Photography when posting and do not apply additional filters that alter the editing.

  • Yes. I shoot with professional equipment and always have backup bodies and lenses on location.

  • Head to the contact page and send me a message with your session type and preferred timeframe. I will be in touch within one to two business days to start the conversation.
